3rd quarterly report at National Grid ESO

This quarterly report is the third of four reports I will submit during my time as an ES Cornwall Scholarship holder and covers my first three months with National Grid ESO. In the three months covered by this third quarterly report, I have commenced my time as a Power System Engineer in the Product Operability team. In the early sections of this report, I will provide an introduction to the Great Britain electricity network and highlight some of the work done to date to transition to a network less reliant on synchronous generation and with greater renewable generation integration. Following this I will provide a more specific overview of the work I have been focusing on over the last three months including:

  1. A study using PSCAD of how the short circuit ratio at a HVDC converter connection affects its stability,
  2. Progress on deploying a real time inertia monitoring tool, and
  3. An investigation of how frequency and the rate-of-change-of-frequency differs across the Great Britain network in different regions and inertia profiles
